Who We Are
The Wilderness Trust is a Non-Profit Organization founded to save one of the last true Wildernesses’s of England, a small pocket of river valley in North Devon, England.

Introduction
Rising on Dartmoor’s slow northward descent and falling through rural farmland, oak, beech and ash forests, the river Torridge makes its way to the sea at Bideford on the rugged North Atlantic coast. Its journey has become synonymous with Henry Williams’ Tarka The Otter and Ted Hughes, poet Laureate, whose fondness of fishing its secret pools gave rise to a voice of solitude treasured throughout the world.

The Place
The Torridge passes through North Devon’s unique landscape and at it’s heart it crosses through a wilderness of unspoilt beauty about halfway through its journey. This is the short stretch that Hughes knew well. A secret and defenceless world of owls and foxes, eels, salmon and oaks.

The valley has remained unchanged since the middle ages
Ted Hughes fished this secret world and it's celebrated solitude has brought joy to millions across the world.
Oaks cling to a precipice which falls steeply to the river below. Falcons, buzzards and deer, the dark coronets inhabit the place as well as otters, foxes, kingfishers and long eared owls, barn owls and tawny owls, such is it's extraordinary diversity. Rare lichens and ferns cling to the oaks and at evening the valley comes alive with its daily bird chorus.
